NORA is the next-generation airborne radar with Active Electronically Steered Antenna (AESA) technology. Until recently, combat aircraft radars used fixed mechanically scanned antennas or passive electronically scanned antennas. For the next generation of radars for combat aircraft and UAVs, Saab will produce systems based on advanced AESA technology. A totally new era begins when the NORA-AESA system enters service in the next decade. It adds a whole range of new capabilities and functionalities. The NORA-AESA radar solution is a true multi-mode as well as multi-function microwave system. Major research programmes have long been investigating NORA-AESA system capabilities, architecture concepts, as well as antenna and microwave technology.
Saabs multi-function solution with AESA gives the system designer new ways of meeting needs for better detection, tracking performance and operation. With the Saab NORA-AESA system, the waveform, signal processing and antenna beam patterns can easily be optimised, through software, individually for each particular operation mode and for specific threats or missions. This new NORA-AESA technology opens up a new generation of flexible multi-function capabilities. It is only limited by the imagination when it comes to understanding different threat scenarios.
