Embraer (A17-18) has received a follow-on order for eight more EMB 314 Super Tucano counterinsurgency aircraft from the Indonesian air force, a top company official says.
"Embraer signed a contract for the second batch of Super Tucano airplanes," says Luiz Carlos Aguiar, president of Embraer Defense and Security.
Indonesia has already ordered a batch of eight such aircraft, the first of which is set to be delivered this year, he says. The first four aircraft should arrive in a "couple of months".
Deliveries of the first batch should be completed in 2013. That would be followed shortly by the second batch, which is set to be delivered starting 2014. All eight aircraft in the second batch will be delivered in 2014.

Embraer is not able to disclose the value of the contract because of a non-disclosure agreement, Aguiar says.
Brazil is also providing training for the Indonesian air force. Indonesian pilots are already undergoing training in Brazil, but there will soon be Brazilians going over to Indonesia to provide additional support.
The Indonesians are Embraers first customer for the type in the region, Aguiar says, but there are other potential customers in the region. In addition, there are sales campaigns ongoing in South and Central America, and Africa. Aguiar says he is surprised by just how much interest there is from African nations.
Meanwhile, the Embraer and partner Sierra Nevada have submitted their proposal for the US Air Forces light air support programme - which aims to supply the Afghan air force with a light attack aircraft. The company expects a selection at the beginning of next year.
DND Tend to Select SuperTucano - DND Eyes Korea, Brazil for Military Aircraft
The Department of National Defense said Thursday that it is eyeing government-to-government transactions with SouthKorea and Brazil for the procurement of T-50 advanced jet trainers and Embraer EMB 314 SuperTucano turboprop light attack aircraft.
In a phone patch interview with reporters, Defense Secretary Voltaire Gazmin said that these aircraft are needed to protect Philippine airspace.
The South Korean built T-50 is a supersonic trainer that can also perform in the light-strike role. The SuperTucano is designed for light attack, counter insurgency (COIN), close air support, aerial reconnaissance missions.
Government-to-government, or G2G, transactions are non-commercial interactions between two governments’ organizations, departments, and authorities.
Gazmin made the disclosure amid criticisms from Bayan Muna party list Rep. Teddy Casiño that the use of G2G transactions in the acquisition of military equipment is prone to corruption due to lack of bidding.
Gazmin countered that G2G transactions will eliminate middlemen who benefit from commissions, thereby resulting in cheaper acquisition prices.
Also, Gazmin gave assurances that under the transparency program of the Aquino administration, “all contracts and processes are open to scrutiny by the people.” He said this transparency is being observed in the bidding for similar assets.
“If you are going to go through a third party, there will be commissions and the price will be higher. Now, in government to government (deals), middle men are avoided and at the same time, government officials are accountable in their dealings,” he said.
The DND is also looking to obtain ships and communication equipment from either SouthKorea, Italy, France, Great Britain or Brazil. These acquisitions are also to be carried out through G2G transactions.

Indonesia has provisionally selected the KAI T-50 Golden Eagle as a new jet trainer, and will buy 16, according to the Chosunilbo newspaper in Seoul. The paper said that Korea Aerospace Industries “slashed the price of the T-50 to less than $25 million per jet” to head off competition from the Russian Yak-130.

PM: Iraq interested in Czech L-159 fighter planes
ČTK |
8 March 2012
Prague, March 7 (CTK) - Iraq military continues to be interested in the purchase of Czech-made L-159 subsonic fighter planes, Czech Prime Minister Petr Necas said after a cabinet meeting today.
Necas said aircraft makers from other countries are of course competing for the contract on the delivery of fighter planes for Iraq, too.
Czech Aero Vodochody company has been negotiating about the deal in Iraq for some time. The L-159s rivals are British Hawk and a supersonic plane offered by Korea in cooperation with the U.S. producer Lockheed Martin.
Czech Defence Minister Alexandr Vondra reported on the latest development of the negotiations with Iraq representatives at the cabinet meeting today.
The next negotiating round is to take place in Bagdad within two weeks, Vondra said.
Iraqi Defence Minister Saadoun Dulaimi assured Vondra during his visit to Prague in January that Iraq keeps being interested in the L-159s.
According to available information, Iraq is first of all interested in new planes made by Aero Vodochody. The Czech Republic would like to sell also the already produced but mothballed planes, however.
Czech representatives point out that these planes may be available practically immediately, unlike new aircraft whose production may take a few years.
The sale of new Czech aircraft to Iraq might be the beginning of long-term cooperation in military aviation between the two countries.
Iraq allegedly plans to buy up to 24 new aircraft.
Czech military pilots currently use 24 L-159s, while 36 of these planes are mothballed. The maintenance of the redundant planes costs about 30 million crowns a year.
Five of the redundant planes were swapped for one CASA C-295 transport aircraft and several of them were used for spare parts or turned into two-seat aircraft. The military is considering further remaking of the unused one-seat L-159s into two-seat test aircraft, media wrote.
